Orthocera Orthocerida Fossil pendant in Silver Plate - Ancient Marine Mollusk Fossil

This really unique pendant is actually an ancient marine mollusk called an Orthocera.  It's fossilized and very hard like stone.  The front is polished to a super smooth surface and the back, is natural.  This gives you a really nice experience when wearing this pendant.

This fossil measures 1 1/4 niches long by 1 inch wide and I've hand wrapped it with silver plate wire.  This type of wire has a copper inner core and the patina will show through over time, so due to this, I suggest you don't wear it while bathing or swimming.  The silver will last longer if don't.  I also use this wire so that my pendants can be affordable and for those who prefer not to wear sterling silver.  This is a great choice if you are buying this as a gift for a younger person as it keeps the costs down.

An Orthocera is an ancient marine mollusk that had large eyes and a well developed head.  It lived over 450 million years ago in the late Triassic period.  The surface of this fossil is polished and smooth - there is a lot of great detail.

It's shell was long and straight and somewhat curved.  Some feel that these creatures may have been similar to our modern day squid.   Like modern cephalopods, they would have used jet propulsion to move in the water. Most likely they would not have been very agile with their long bulky shells.
