A stalactite is a type of mineral that grows downward from the ceiling or wall in limestone caves. It is sometimes referred to as dripstone.  They grow at a rate of 1 millimeter per year.  These stones are formed when a single mineral laden drop of water begins to drip into the cave. As each drop falls it leaves behind a ring of calcite.  With each new drop this ring begins to grow and grow.  They can be be icicle-shaped, straw-shaped, curtain-shaped, or formed as terraces.
